Over the past two years, the Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team has grown significantly in both number of swimmers and community support!

In order to sustain and increase this growth, we have had to evolve as a whole swim team. The first change made was a name change from the Sea Dragons to the Typhoons. The name change comes about two years following the conception of the original team name, but is a welcomed change by our swimming community!

Second, our coaching philosophy has changed with the addition of a new coaching staff. We have transitioned successfully from a fully recreational swim team to an all-inclusive swim team! We do not discriminate based on ability and will accept anyone willing to have a “can do” attitude and who meets the minimum requirements. We do not have try-outs or cuts because we want everyone to have the same opportunity to experience the fun of the swimming world!

Finally, our team apparel has changed with the addition of a team sponsor (TYR Sports). Being TYR Sports sponsored it allows us to maintain top level swimming equipment to not only help our look, but it also helps our training program as TYR Sports has some of the most comprehensive training equipment available to the community!

With that said, the Typhoon Swim Team now has over 60 swimmers from the Hamden, North Haven, Bethany, and surrounding communities. We have swim groups (practice groups) for all skill levels and age ranges from 5 – 18. We participate in the Yankee Cluster League which allows our swim team to compete in YMCA dual, tri, and championship swim meets.

Competition aside, we fully promote a healthy, family-fun atmosphere for everyone!
