Junior Group
The Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoon Junior group is made up of swimmers who typically have two years of competitive swimming experience, or are involved in a high school swimming program. Participants should be focused on achieving personal best times and attaining goals set with the coaching staff.

Practices Available: Four practices that last approx. 1.5 hours will be availalble to the swimmers. There are also four dry-land sessions per week will also be offered. We recommend/require three practices per week and at least 1 dry-land session each week.

Training Focus: Continuation of intermediate to advanced development of the gross and fine motor skills with regard to stroke and racing technique. Solid practice habits are established and reinforced with more advanced training sets and additional yardage. Dry-land strength and stretching programs are introduced to develop muscle endurance and strength, reduce the possibility of injury, and promote safety. Swimmers will be introduced to the basics of goal setting and develop methods with the coaching staff on how to accomplish those goals
Competition Focus: The Junior group will participate in YMCA dual and tri meets as well as the Yankee Cluster Championship (splash fee required). Pending qualification times they will also be able to participate in the YMCA New England Regional Championship and YMCA National Championships (spash fee required for both Regional and National Championships)
Equipment Requirements: Swim caps are required for hair longer than shoulder length during practice and are required for everyone during swim meets (one team cap will be provided at registration for those meets). A competition suit is also required and can be ordered upon request. With regard to practice equipment, kickboards, pull buoys, and fins can be ordered through our Equipment Manager. The only other requirement for our swimmers is to have a great attitude and willingness to learn and work hard!
