Senior Group

The Senior Typhoons represent the highest level of competitive swimming that is offered by the Hamden North Haven YMCA. Swimmers in the Senior group generally have more than four years of experience in competitive swimming, or are involved in a competitive high school program. Participants strongly focus on achieving personal best times, attaining goals set with their swim coaches, and qualifying for Championship swim meets or breaking team records.

Goals: To have fun and advance in the sport of competitive swimming while acting as a role model for the team in demonstrating the values of the YMCA of the USA and the Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoons.

Ability Criteria: Swimmers in the Senior group must be able to complete a 500 yard freestyle in less than 7:00.00, a 200 yard IM in less than 3:00, and a 100 yard freestyle in less than 1:20.00.

Practices Available: Five practices that last approximately 2 hours each are available each week. Dry-land workouts that total around 2.5 hours per week are also offered. We recommend/require Seniors attend at least 4 practices per week, and a majority of the dry-land sessions each week.

Training Focus: Advanced and intensive development of gross and fine motor skills required for proper stroke technique of the four competitive strokes. Solid practice habits are required and reinforced while more advanced training sets, and elite yardage are introduced. Stroke technique development is highlighted via advanced swimming drills and practice sessions. Dry-land strength and stretching programs are maintained and increased to develop muscle endurance, strength, and memory. Swimmers will actively set goals with their coaching staff, and classroom time will be spent reviewing training and stroke analysis videos, charting personal performance, learning race strategies, and learning fluid dynamics.

Competition Focus: Seniors will participate in YMCA dual and tri meets as well as the Yankee Cluster Championship (splash fee required). Pending qualification times they will also be able to participate in the YMCA New England Regional Championship and YMCA National Championships (splash fee required for both Regional and National Championships)
