History & Philosophy

Over the past three years, the Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team has grown into one of the areas only swim team programs to provide YMCA swimming and an optional USA swimming program (athletes currently participate as unattached) to the community.  Along with that growth has come the expansion of the team to include over 70 swimmers ranging from entry-level swim team members to national athletes.

However, the Typhoons didn’t accomplish this growth overnight.  Starting in 2008, Andy Scherer (head coach) assumed the program that started at the Hamden-North Haven YMCA Sea Dragons.  At that point, the team had 24 swimmers and was structured to be a recreation and development team.  While this was a great starting point, there was a significant desire to expand the program to be competitive with other YMCA teams.

In the summer of 2008, Coach Andy took the first three steps by growing the coaching staff with an outstanding assistance coach (Elaina Duggan), altering the training groups to be based off of age as well as ability level, and changing the name to the Typhoons.

Since that time, the Typhoons have grown to a 70+ person YMCA swim program with an optional USA swim team program (where the athletes currently compete as unattached) with a 5 person coaching team that operates on the Typhoons’ unique Swimmer Development Model.  The swimmers have experienced outstanding improvements (over 60% of the events swum have resulted in personal best times).  In fact, this past season, the Typhoons grew their success with the team’s first age group title of League Champions (8 and under girls) and top age group placements for 9 and 10 (boys and girls) , and 11 and 12 (boys and girls).

The Typhoons look to continue their growth in the community as we wholeheartedly believe that individual attention to stroke technique as well as an emphasis on developing a love for the sport of swimming drives a successful team.
