Focusing on YMCA National Champion qualifying times and reaching their fullest potential in and out of the pool, the Senior group Typhoon swimmers represent the highest level of competitive swimming in the area. Typically, swimmers (ages 12 and over) have at least 5 years of competitive swimming experience.
Training & Practices
Swimmers in the Senior group are expected to attend at least 5 in-water practices per week and at least 2 dry-land sessions per week as well. In-water practices range from 1.5 hours to 2 hours and range between 4400 yards and 8800 yards.
- Increase volume and intensity of training.
- Utilization of integrated training model.
- Begin to specialize in stroke and distance.
- Perfect race technique & skills (in and out of practice).
- Transfer dry-land power development into swimming performance.
- Cross training activities.
- Maintain flexibility & increase core muscle group stength (and coordination).
- Adapt to diverse training methods.
- Refine stroke technique during all speeds and intensity of swimming.
- Apply strength and power to swimming performance.
- Specialize in strokes and competition distances.
- Retain range of motion and muscular cooordination at all swimming speeds.
- Refine race skills (starts, turns, tactics, pace, finishes, etc).
- Learn to taper for peak performance.
- Enjoyment of the process (setting goals, working towards the goals, improving technique and endurance, and actively trying to achieve those
goals). - Understand and practice performance management, recovery techniques, mental skills,etc.
- Independence (i.e. working with a coach and support personnel, but taking responsibility for self).
- Improved personal skills including education & vocational objectives.
Competition Objectives:
New England Regional Championships, Age Group Championships, Zones, and Nationals. Competition in “open” events as ability improves. Selection of events begins to focus on stroke and distance. Race strategies and mental skills are perfected.Attendance at all YMCA meets is required, and USA meets are significantly encouraged. Back to the Top
Equipment Requirements:
- Practice swim caps are required for hair longer than shoulder length during practice.
- Sneakers and athletic clothing for dry-land sessions.
- Team Caps for meets (one team cap will be provided at registration for those meets).
- Competition suit (purchased from Metro Swim Shop).
- Other practice equipment (kickboard, pull buoy, fins, paddles, and a pair of old sneakers that can get wet). All equipment for practice is needed by the 2nd week of the season.
