Great Meet With Indian Valley YMCA Today!

Congratulations to both the Indian Valley YMCA Breakers as well as the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons on a stellar swim meet this morning!  All the swimmers did a phenomenal job in and out of the water.  The coaches and I noticed that there was a great sportsmanship attitude throughout the meet with both swim teams, and we cannot appreciate that enough.

With all of that said, I have updated the meet results which you can either find on the results page or through this link: Indian Valley YMCA.

Also, as an update, I will not be at the Y over the next week due to a vacation, but practices will be held as normal.  Should you need anything please contact one of the other coaches or e-mail me (ascherer@cccymca.org).

The second update has to do with the Branford meet on the 18th…the warm-up time has been confirmed as 7:15am (nice and early so we can get out before 9:45am)!  Looking forward to seeing you on the 18th!

Go Typhoons!!

Meet Results Posted for Meriden YMCA

This past weekend proved to be an outstanding meet for both the Meriden YMCA Seals as well as the Hamden/North Haven Typhoons.  Several swimmers from the Hamden/North Haven YMCA achieved personal best times, and all swimmers looked like they had a great time (yet again).  In fact, when I had asked the Silver group what was their favorite part of the weekend they almost immediately exclaimed “The Swim Meet”!!

With that said, I have posted the results to the swim meet on the Meet Result page, but you can also find it here (Meriden YMCA).  Again, great job to all swimmers, and I am looking forward to our next meet (December 4th against  Fairfield YMCA).

Go Typhoons!

Last Week of the Summer Season

As we enter the final week of this summer season, I want to thank all of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon parents and swimmers for their 3 1/2 months of hard work and dedication!  You have all done a great job this season as parents have supported both the swimmers and the team, the swimmers supported each other and gave it their all throughout practices, and the coaches who put their time and effort into helping the swimmer attain great results.

With all of that said, Thursday will be our last day of practice as the 13 and over swimmers will be in competition on Friday evening, and Wednesday evening’s practice is canceled for the Senior group to get down to the yardage (well, more-so the rest) that we need this week.  If there are any questions about this, please let me know.

The coaches and I are looking forward to an outstanding performance from all of the Typhoon swimmers!  We wish all of you the best throughout this week as well as going into Yankee Cluster Championships this upcoming weekend.

Go Typhoons!

Yankee Cluster Championships – Summer 2010

Going into the next week, we will be dropping the hammer with the Hamden/North Haven Typhoon swimmers.  Each individual swimmer will be focusing on race technique and overall meet performance as we near closer to Friday and Saturday.

For Friday evening, the arrival time for 13 and over swimmers at the Northern Middlesex YMCA is 4:45pm.  Warm-ups will start at 5:00pm, and the meet will start as soon as possible following warm-ups and one-way starts.

For Saturday, the arrival time for the 12 and under swimmers at the Northern Middlesex YMCA is 6:45am.  Warm-ups will start at 7:00am, and the meet will start (as long as all goes to plan).

So, in the coming week, practices will be a bit shortened for the Juniors and Seniors as we will be decreasing our total yardage by 100 yards per day until we reach our max taper at 1350 yards per hour.  The intensity of practice will maintain, and hopefully we will see an ideal 4 – 6% drop in times for our sprint/stroke events, and around a 2 – 4% drop for the distance events.

As always, if you have any questions about the meet or practice times, etc, please contact me at any point!

Spring/Summer Swim Team Starts Monday!

With our pre-season swim clinic almost over, the Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoons look to start their Spring/Summer season this upcoming Monday (April 26, 2010).  However, before we move forward, let’s take a look at what we have done so far this past week and a half in our clinic:

Flip Turns
  • Increased the speed that they get around on the flip
  • Improved the efficiency of their last pull before the flip
  • Adjusted their hand positions prior to the push-off from the wall
  • Fine-tuned the smaller details of the turn to make it as efficient as possible
Freestyle
  • Worked on individual hand entry
  • Focused on improving the high catch and early vertical forearm
  • Improved body position and kick technique
  • Altered the follow through of the pull to increase torque
Backstroke
  • Worked the efficiency of  the kick
  • Introduced utilizing the core during the stroke to increase velocity
  • Practiced proper body position and swimming downhill
  • Implemented a new flip turn technique to minimize time between the last stroke and the flip turn
Breaststroke
  • Focused on kick timing to increase stroke efficiency
  • Worked on when to let go of the water during the stroke
  • Introduced “pressing”
  • Practiced the proper way to pull and shoot the hands for maximum torque and minimum drag
Butterfly
  • Improved the efficiency and the timing of the kick
  • Worked two different ways to catch and pull the water, and each swimmer decided which way was better for them
  • Practiced the timing of the stroke
  • Introduced a new butterfly turn in order to minimize arm drag during the breakout

Even though we have already had a great clinic with the swimmers, we still have an IM day, and a day to review with everyone!  All in all, this has been a very successful clinic, and the coaches can only look forward to what is going to be an outstanding (and fun) Spring/Summer with the Hamden North Haven Swim Team!

If you’re interested in finding out more information about the Spring and Summer season, please either visit our Registration Page or contact Coach Andy.

Happy Swimming!

Swim Team Records Updated

The Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team‘s team records have been updated to reflect the 14 records broken over the Summer Season.  Congratulations to all of the swimmers who broke records this past season, and I absolutely look forward to seeing you all progress next year as well!

To check out our swim team records, just hover over Swim Meets and click on Team Records.

New Swim Team Website Done

For all of our Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoon swimmers, parents, and fans I’m sure that you are all noticing a difference on website!  We have had to revise the template and the layout to help people navigate through and find information as our swim team grows.

I/we do, however, need your help to browse through the site and find out if there are any glitches, typos, or if you think we need something else.  Enjoy the new and improved website, and please let me know if you find anything!

Updated Hamden North Haven Swim Team Website

Alright, I just updated our Hamden North Haven Swim Team site, and added our team records.  I know that there are several records that have been broken this year and not all of the records are current to today’s date.  However, I will be updating them as we move forward throughout the year.  With that said, feel free to take a look at our new swim team records, and let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.  As always, we are breaking records almost every meet so it will be a bit tough to keep up with this year…no complaints on my end with regard to the record-breaking!  Keep up the great work, Typhoons!

Also, as a quick reminder, I do need to know if you are attending the upcoming swim meet against Southington YMCA’s Swim Team.  The meet is at home so there is little to no travel for everyone, and this is our last YMCA Dual Swim Meet prior to Yankee Cluster Championships in Plainville (weekend of February 20th).  Thanks, again, Everyone!

Swim Workout Tonight

I have to congratulate all of the groups that swam tonight; we had one of our hardest swim practices and swim workouts in-water and our first “real” dry-land workout as well!  The Silver Group swam extremely well and worked extremely hard throughout the entire practice!  The Junior and Senior group pushed themselves as well through almost 6000 yards in their 2 hr intense IM practice!

Just as an idea for those blog readers out there, the Seniors swam 24 50′s in IM Order, then 16 100 IM’s, then 8 200 IM’s all while keeping the same pace!  So, again, great job pushing through the practice, Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team! Go Typhoons!
