2012 Short Course Yankee Cluster Championships

We have received the meet information for Yankee Cluster Championships (I have attached these documents to the e-mail). Some things to consider: (1) this meet is mandatory for all of our athletes, (2) if there are extenuating circumstances that your swimmer absolutely cannot attend, that needs to be expressed/explained to me by Friday, February 3, (3) Entries will be determined by the coaching staff by Wednesday, February 8 that will include entry fee amounts per swimmer, and (4) entry fees are due by Wednesday, February 15 in either cash or check made out to the Hamden-North Haven YMCA Typhoons. If we do not receive entry fees by February 15, the swimmer will be scratched from the meet.

Here are the meet sessions:

Friday, March 2, 2012 (11 & Over Distance Events)

Female Session: Warm-up: 4:00 pm, Start: 5:00 pm
Male Session: Warm-up: 6:00 pm, Start: 7:00 pm

Saturday, March 3, 2012 (10 & Under Events)

8 & Under Girls: Warm-up 7:30 am, Start 8:30 am
8 & Under Boys: Warm-up 10:00 am, Start 11:00 am
9/10 Girls: Warm-up 12:30 pm, Start 1:30 pm
9/10 Boys: Warm-up 4:00 pm, Start 5:00 pm

Sunday, March 4, 2012 (11 & Over Events)

11/12 Girls: Warm-up 7:30 am, Start 8:30 am
11/12 Boys: Warm-up 11:00 am, Start 12:00 pm
13 & Over Boys / 15 & Over Girls: Warm-up 1:30 pm, Start 2:30 pm
13/14 Girls: Warm-up 4:00 pm, Start 5:00 pm

While there are some significant changes to this year’s championship meet, our team goal is always to have fun while improving on the previous season. To that end, the coaches will determine the most opportune events for each individual swimmer as well as combinations for relay teams.

Wallingford YMCA Swim Meet Results Posted & Season Updates

Congratulations to all of the Typhoons who participated this past weekend in the away meet with the Wallingford YMCA Dolphins. Both swim teams did a phenomenal job, and the Typhoons came out with several best time swims as well as a few more individual qualifying times for New England Regionals. As a reminder, there is an away meet this weekend at the Torrington YMCA. For those parents that still owe participation points please consider timing at this meet.

Also, as we near the end of the season, I want to take this opportunity to explain how the end of the season works as clearly as possible so there isn’t any confusion (or at least we can minimize confusion).

Yankee Cluster Championships

All swimmers participate in Yankee Clusters as this is the last regular season meet and is truly a lot of fun for the swimmers and the coaches. The coaching staff is currently brainstorming some theme ideas so that we can have a little more fun as well! Here are some more details:

February 25 – February 27 @ Kennedy High School in Waterbury
$25 flat entry fee per swimmer – must be paid on/by February 11th or the swimmer(s) will not be able to participate
Friday 25 @ 5:00pm – 11 and up distance events
Saturday 26 @ 7:30am – 8 and under swimmers (need at least 3 parent “workers”)
Saturday 26 @ 12:30pm – 9 and 10 swimmers (need at least 3 parent “workers”)
Sunday 27 @ 7:30am – 11 and 12 swimmers (need at least 3 parent “workers”)
Sunday 27 @ 12:30pm – 13 and over swimmers (need at least 2 parent “workers”)
Individual events will be selected by the coaching staff
Relays will be selected in terms of “A” and “B” relays as based off our New England Regional selection process (described below)

New England Regionals

Participants in the YMCA New England Regional Championships are either individual qualifiers (Qualifying Times) or swimmers on a relay team. Here are some more details for this meet:

March 25 – March 27 @ Harvard University (Boston, MA), Blodgett Pool
Please make accommodations at the Double Tree on Soldier’s Field Road, Cambridge, MA
$6.00 per event entry fee
Relay teams are narrowed down to top 6 swimmers by the end of this week (January 18). Four of those swimmers are then selected based on practice work ethic, overall meet performances throughout the season, and other “intangible” factors. Those four swimmers will be notified no later than the first week of February, and will be considered our “A” relay for both Yankee Clusters and New England’s.
Friday, March 25 @ 5:00pm – Swimmers 15 to 18
Saturday, March 26 @ 6:15am – Swimmers 11 and 12
Saturday, March 26 @ 3:00pm – Swimmers 8 and under
Sunday, March 27 @ 6:15am – Swimmers 9 and 10
Sunday, March 27 @ 4:00pm – Swimmers 13 and 14

Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons vs Fairfield YMCA Flyfins Results Posted

Meet Results Posted for Meriden YMCA

This past weekend proved to be an outstanding meet for both the Meriden YMCA Seals as well as the Hamden/North Haven Typhoons. Several swimmers from the Hamden/North Haven YMCA achieved personal best times, and all swimmers looked like they had a great time (yet again). In fact, when I had asked the Silver group what was their favorite part of the weekend they almost immediately exclaimed “The Swim Meet”!!

Valley Ansonia Home Swim Meet Results

This past Sunday (November 14th) marked the official start of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team’s short course meet season. As we played host to the Valley Ansonia YMCA Sprinters, the meet went off without a hitch! Parents from both swim teams stepped up to help time, the kids had a great time overall, and the coaches are extremely proud of everyone’s accomplishments.

Four Days Til Swim-A-Long

The third annual Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons Swim-A-Long is approaching fast! As one of the larger fundraisers for the team, Typhoon families have 4 more days to raise funds (event is on 10-29-2010). Please remember that pledge forms and pledges are due the day of the Swim-A-Long, and swimmers are broken into their respective groups.

This means that there is no practice this Friday, but there is (obviously) the Swim-A-Long in the following order:

Gold, Junior, Senior @ 5:00 – 6:15pm
Silver @ 6:15 – 7:15pm

YMCA National Virtual Invitational Meet (10-23-2010)

Tomorrow marks the first meet of the 2010-2011 short course season for the Gold, Junior and Senior swimmers of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons. At the YMCA National Virtual Invitational Meet, swimmers compete locally and have their times entered into a database which will place their events throughout all competitors throughout the nation. Last year, the Typhoon Swim Team had a very successful meet with several swimmers placing in the top 16, and we are looking forward to more fun and outstanding swims.

Warm-up starts at 12:00, and we look forward to seeing you all (Gold, Junior and Senior swimmers) on the pool deck in Middletown.

Two Coaching Positions Open For Short Course Season

The Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons are looking to expand their coaching staff this upcoming fall. We are in search of a head age group coach as well as an assistant age group coach. Here is a brief overview of the positions:

Head Age Group Coach

Responsible for running 3 swim practices per week for the Gold swim group. Practices can either be modified from the Junior/Senior workouts or written by the age group coach.
Administratively responsible for keeping practice attendance, tracking swim meet attendance, and assisting the head coach with meet entries for the age group
Must possess a minimum of 2 years coaching experience at the club level, be currently CPR/AED and Lifeguard certified (or be able to become certified within 30 days of employment)

Assistant Age Group Coach

Responsible for assisting head age group coaches (Silver and Gold coaches) for 3 practices per week
Must have at least 1 year of coaching experience OR 3 years competitive swimming experience, be able to become CPR/AED and Lifeguard certified within 30 days of employment

Practice Schedule Updated

Even though we just ended the long course season, the coaching staff is very much so looking forward to the upcoming short course season which starts in September. With that said, we have revised the practice schedules for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons to work out better for the working families throughout the community.

YMCA New England Championships 2010: 3 Days Left

The Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoon Swim Team officially has 3 days left until they make their way to the YMCA New England Regional Championships in Boston, MA! This 2009 – 2010 Short Course season marks the first time that the Typhoons have hit double digits in individual qualifiers ranging from the Hamden, North Haven, Bethany, and surrounding communities. This also allows relay teams from each age group to attend the championship meet!
