Annual Friendly’s Fundraiser

The Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons are proud to announce that our third annual Friendly’s Fundraiser is scheduled for November 8, 2011 at the Friendly’s on Universal Drive (North Haven).

This is always a fun time for all of our Typhoon families, and a great way to support the team, your swimmer, and your community.  So, put this on your calendar, bookmark this page, and come enjoy some great food, great ice cream, and great company as we support Typhoon Swimming!

Typhoons Add Two Coaches

Throughout the past few months, the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team has searched for two new coaches (one to lead the Gold group as the age group head coach, and a second to act an an overall assistant coach).  I am proud to announce that the Typhoons have successfully found two coaches to fill those voids.

Coach Laura DeGore will have take on her first season with the Typhoons during the 2010/2011 Short Course season.  Laura comes to the team with over 2 years of coaching experience; most notably with the USC swim camp.  She has an outstanding approach to coaching, and will be a great asset as the Head Age Group coach for the Gold group.  Aside from coaching, Laura is currently a swimmer for Southern Connecticut State University Owls.  Coach Laura looks to continue the success of the Gold group by focusing on individual and overall stroke technique while having a ton of fun.

Coach Kathy May joins the Typhoons for the 2010/2011 Short Course season with several years experience encompassing all areas of aquatics (coaching, learn to swim, etc).  Kathy has a significant background in U.S. Swimming as a stroke and turn official, and U.S. certified coach.  She will be assisting primarily the Juniors and Seniors, but will also help the Silver and Gold groups throughout the year while placing a large emphasis on proper stroke technique.

Along with the two new coaches, we still have our Head Age Group coach for the Silver group (Nicole Fuller) returning for her second season with the Typhoons.  Nicole did a phenomenal job last year coaching the kids, and looks to improve on their success from this past year (and summer season).

And, of course, I (Andy Scherer) will be returning for my third season as the Head Coach for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons.  I am absolutely looking forward to another great season with the swimmers, parents, and fans!

Overall, this is shaping up to be a great season so make sure you tell your friends that the Typhoons are getting bigger and better again this year!  Registration continues to go well, and our swim team spots are filling up rapidly.  As always, if you have any questions or need any other information please feel free to contact me via e-mail or call 203-248-6361, and….

Go Typhoons!

Registration Opens Sunday

Just wanted to send out a quick reminder that registration for short course season starts this upcoming Sunday (August 1st).   We will be capping each group at 20 swimmers so please make sure you reserve your spot on the team sooner than later.

Along with that, the Typhoon’s practice schedule has changed.  We have made life a little easier for the parents with swimmers in multiple age groups, and will be able to utilize all 4 lanes of the pool for two nights out of the week!

As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact coach Andy via e-mail or call 203-248-6361.

Last Day For Accepting Cluster Checks

Please make sure that you turn in your Yankee Cluster Championship checks ($12 per swimmer) by Thursday, July 15th if you are planning on having your swimming attend the meet.  Remember that 13 and over swimmers are Friday evening while 12 and under swimmers are competing on Saturday morning).

Again, please make sure you get the checks and/or money into me no later than tomorrow or your swimmer(s) will not be entered into the meet.  As always, if you have any questions please feel free to let me know!

Check Reminder For Yankee Clusters

Parents, I wanted to shoot a quick reminder blog post out there for all of you.  This week Thursday (July 15th), the check for Yankee Cluster Championships is due in the amount of $12.00 made out to the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons.  If I do not receive a check, I am assuming that your swimmer is not attending and will not be entered into the meet.

With that said, I am absolutely looking forward to a great two weeks of taper time with the Juniors and Seniors (one week for Gold and Silver)!  For those of you who have not gone through a taper period before, please make sure that you try to have your swimmers rest before the meet, eat well, and just relax!  They will be filled to the brim with energy over the next two weeks, and its important that they conserve that energy.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me!

Taper Time For The Next Two Weeks

The 2010 Long Course season for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Swim Team is (almost too) rapidly coming to an end. With tonight marking the last dual meet of the season (swimming against the Wallingford YMCA Dolphins), taper will start this upcoming Monday for the Juniors and Seniors.  Here is a quick look at where we have been, overall, for the season as well as where taper will take us over the course of two weeks.

Throughout the summer season, we have peaked at 3350 yards per hour for the Senior group and around 3000 yards per hour for the Junior group.  With the coming taper period, we will drop to 2150 per hour for both groups for the first week while we maintain work on anaerobic phases and race paces with increased rest and concentration on technique.

For the final week, we will drop the hammer to 1525 yards per hour and fine tune all of our race technique and strategies as the Yankee Cluster Championship hits that Friday (July 23rd) and Saturday (July 24th).

Overall, it has been a phenominal seasaon, and I cannot wait to see how these upcoming two weeks turn out for the Juniors and Seniors.

P.S.  The Silver and Gold groups will be going through a “mini-taper”.  Since they are full of energy anyway, they will be truly focusing on race technique and resting just that last week before Championships.

Go Typhoons!
