2012 Short Course Yankee Cluster Championships

We have received the meet information for Yankee Cluster Championships (I have attached these documents to the e-mail). Some things to consider: (1) this meet is mandatory for all of our athletes, (2) if there are extenuating circumstances that your swimmer absolutely cannot attend, that needs to be expressed/explained to me by Friday, February 3, (3) Entries will be determined by the coaching staff by Wednesday, February 8 that will include entry fee amounts per swimmer, and (4) entry fees are due by Wednesday, February 15 in either cash or check made out to the Hamden-North Haven YMCA Typhoons. If we do not receive entry fees by February 15, the swimmer will be scratched from the meet.

Here are the meet sessions:

While there are some significant changes to this year’s championship meet, our team goal is always to have fun while improving on the previous season. To that end, the coaches will determine the most opportune events for each individual swimmer as well as combinations for relay teams.

If there are any questions regarding the meet, please let me know and I will do the best I can to help!

Annual Friendly’s Fundraiser

The Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons are proud to announce that our third annual Friendly’s Fundraiser is scheduled for November 8, 2011 at the Friendly’s on Universal Drive (North Haven).

This is always a fun time for all of our Typhoon families, and a great way to support the team, your swimmer, and your community.  So, put this on your calendar, bookmark this page, and come enjoy some great food, great ice cream, and great company as we support Typhoon Swimming!

Silver Group Update

Wow!  I am utterly impressed with the number of swimmers that we have already on our Silver practice group!  To give you an idea of why I am in awe, we started this venture that has become Typhoon Swimming a little over 3 years ago with 24 swimmers.  Today, we currently have 22 swimmers enrolled just for the Silver Group!

With that said, I cannot thank you all enough for participating in our program, and it’s our goal to have as much fun with the swimmers as possible (with a little coaching along the way as well, right?)!

I have been asked, “What happens if we get over 30 swimmers on the Silver Group?  How will you be able to maintain adequate attention for each individual swimmer?”

First and foremost, this is an outstanding question and one that I’ve been thinking about for the past couple of weeks.  The coaches and I have worked out a plan that will break down the Silver group into 4 squads (for lack of a better term).  The first 10 who registered for the Silver Group will be in “Squad 1″, from 11 to 20 will be “Squad 2″, from 21 to 30 will be “Squad 3″, and from 31 to 40 will be “Squad 4″.  We will also add another practice day (Thursday at 4:30pm).

So, here’s where we get a little creative and fix the issue of “too many swimmers”.  Squad 1 will practice Monday, Tuesday, and Friday (during their assigned times).  Squad 2 will practice Monday, Thursday, and Friday (during their times), Squad 3 will practice Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (during their times), and Squad 4 will practice Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (during their times).

And, finally, if we do (in fact) have that many swimmers on the team, we will also be looking into adding an assistant age group coach to help Coach Lauren and, hopefully, save some of her sanity!

With all of that said, nothing is going into play just yet, but please make sure that you register for the season as soon as possible so that we can make the needed alterations and move forward!  Again, thank you so much, and we are all looking forward to an outstanding season!

p.s.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me at 203 248 6361 or AScherer@cccymca.org.

Great Meet With Indian Valley YMCA Today!

Congratulations to both the Indian Valley YMCA Breakers as well as the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons on a stellar swim meet this morning!  All the swimmers did a phenomenal job in and out of the water.  The coaches and I noticed that there was a great sportsmanship attitude throughout the meet with both swim teams, and we cannot appreciate that enough.

With all of that said, I have updated the meet results which you can either find on the results page or through this link: Indian Valley YMCA.

Also, as an update, I will not be at the Y over the next week due to a vacation, but practices will be held as normal.  Should you need anything please contact one of the other coaches or e-mail me (ascherer@cccymca.org).

The second update has to do with the Branford meet on the 18th…the warm-up time has been confirmed as 7:15am (nice and early so we can get out before 9:45am)!  Looking forward to seeing you on the 18th!

Valley Ansonia Home Swim Meet Results

This past Sunday (November 14th) marked the official start of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team’s short course meet season.  As we played host to the Valley Ansonia YMCA Sprinters, the meet went off without a hitch!  Parents from both swim teams stepped up to help time, the kids had a great time overall, and the coaches are extremely proud of everyone’s accomplishments.

We have posted the results on our Meet Result page, but you can also find the results here: Valley Ansonia YMCA Results.

Again, congratulations to all the swimmers, and I am looking forward to another great meet this weekend as we swim against the Meriden YMCA in Meriden!

Four Days Til Swim-A-Long

The third annual Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons Swim-A-Long is approaching fast!  As one of the larger fundraisers for the team, Typhoon families have 4 more days to raise funds (event is on 10-29-2010).  Please remember that pledge forms and pledges are due the day of the Swim-A-Long, and swimmers are broken into their respective groups.

This means that there is no practice this Friday, but there is (obviously) the Swim-A-Long in the following order:

  • Gold, Junior, Senior @ 5:00 – 6:15pm
  • Silver @ 6:15 – 7:15pm

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and I look forward to a great event this upcoming Friday!

Typhoons Add Two Coaches

Throughout the past few months, the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team has searched for two new coaches (one to lead the Gold group as the age group head coach, and a second to act an an overall assistant coach).  I am proud to announce that the Typhoons have successfully found two coaches to fill those voids.

Coach Laura DeGore will have take on her first season with the Typhoons during the 2010/2011 Short Course season.  Laura comes to the team with over 2 years of coaching experience; most notably with the USC swim camp.  She has an outstanding approach to coaching, and will be a great asset as the Head Age Group coach for the Gold group.  Aside from coaching, Laura is currently a swimmer for Southern Connecticut State University Owls.  Coach Laura looks to continue the success of the Gold group by focusing on individual and overall stroke technique while having a ton of fun.

Coach Kathy May joins the Typhoons for the 2010/2011 Short Course season with several years experience encompassing all areas of aquatics (coaching, learn to swim, etc).  Kathy has a significant background in U.S. Swimming as a stroke and turn official, and U.S. certified coach.  She will be assisting primarily the Juniors and Seniors, but will also help the Silver and Gold groups throughout the year while placing a large emphasis on proper stroke technique.

Along with the two new coaches, we still have our Head Age Group coach for the Silver group (Nicole Fuller) returning for her second season with the Typhoons.  Nicole did a phenomenal job last year coaching the kids, and looks to improve on their success from this past year (and summer season).

And, of course, I (Andy Scherer) will be returning for my third season as the Head Coach for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons.  I am absolutely looking forward to another great season with the swimmers, parents, and fans!

Overall, this is shaping up to be a great season so make sure you tell your friends that the Typhoons are getting bigger and better again this year!  Registration continues to go well, and our swim team spots are filling up rapidly.  As always, if you have any questions or need any other information please feel free to contact me via e-mail or call 203-248-6361, and….

Registration Opens Sunday

Just wanted to send out a quick reminder that registration for short course season starts this upcoming Sunday (August 1st).   We will be capping each group at 20 swimmers so please make sure you reserve your spot on the team sooner than later.

Along with that, the Typhoon’s practice schedule has changed.  We have made life a little easier for the parents with swimmers in multiple age groups, and will be able to utilize all 4 lanes of the pool for two nights out of the week!

As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact coach Andy via e-mail or call 203-248-6361.

Practice Schedule Updated

Even though we just ended the long course season, the coaching staff is very much so looking forward to the upcoming short course season which starts in September.  With that said, we have revised the practice schedules for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons to work out better for the working families throughout the community.

You can find the updated swim team practice schedule by clicking here: practice schedule.  And, if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below or contact Coach Andy.
