New Meet Added To Schedule! December 18th at Branford YMCA

Typhoons swimmers and parents, I am happy to announce that we have an intra-association meet with the Branford YMCA Stingrays on December 18th.  I am waiting on meet details such as arrival time and meet events, but this has been confirmed as an “early morning” meet and will take place at the Branford YMCA.

This, of course, means more chances for kids to qualify for Regional Championships and yet another opportunity for us to have fun on a Saturday morning!

Valley Ansonia Home Swim Meet Results

This past Sunday (November 14th) marked the official start of the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team’s short course meet season.  As we played host to the Valley Ansonia YMCA Sprinters, the meet went off without a hitch!  Parents from both swim teams stepped up to help time, the kids had a great time overall, and the coaches are extremely proud of everyone’s accomplishments.

We have posted the results on our Meet Result page, but you can also find the results here: Valley Ansonia YMCA Results.

Again, congratulations to all the swimmers, and I am looking forward to another great meet this weekend as we swim against the Meriden YMCA in Meriden!

Typhoons Add Two Coaches

Throughout the past few months, the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team has searched for two new coaches (one to lead the Gold group as the age group head coach, and a second to act an an overall assistant coach).  I am proud to announce that the Typhoons have successfully found two coaches to fill those voids.

Coach Laura DeGore will have take on her first season with the Typhoons during the 2010/2011 Short Course season.  Laura comes to the team with over 2 years of coaching experience; most notably with the USC swim camp.  She has an outstanding approach to coaching, and will be a great asset as the Head Age Group coach for the Gold group.  Aside from coaching, Laura is currently a swimmer for Southern Connecticut State University Owls.  Coach Laura looks to continue the success of the Gold group by focusing on individual and overall stroke technique while having a ton of fun.

Coach Kathy May joins the Typhoons for the 2010/2011 Short Course season with several years experience encompassing all areas of aquatics (coaching, learn to swim, etc).  Kathy has a significant background in U.S. Swimming as a stroke and turn official, and U.S. certified coach.  She will be assisting primarily the Juniors and Seniors, but will also help the Silver and Gold groups throughout the year while placing a large emphasis on proper stroke technique.

Along with the two new coaches, we still have our Head Age Group coach for the Silver group (Nicole Fuller) returning for her second season with the Typhoons.  Nicole did a phenomenal job last year coaching the kids, and looks to improve on their success from this past year (and summer season).

And, of course, I (Andy Scherer) will be returning for my third season as the Head Coach for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons.  I am absolutely looking forward to another great season with the swimmers, parents, and fans!

Overall, this is shaping up to be a great season so make sure you tell your friends that the Typhoons are getting bigger and better again this year!  Registration continues to go well, and our swim team spots are filling up rapidly.  As always, if you have any questions or need any other information please feel free to contact me via e-mail or call 203-248-6361, and….

Practice Schedule Updated

Even though we just ended the long course season, the coaching staff is very much so looking forward to the upcoming short course season which starts in September.  With that said, we have revised the practice schedules for the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons to work out better for the working families throughout the community.

You can find the updated swim team practice schedule by clicking here: practice schedule.  And, if you have any questions or comments please feel free to leave them below or contact Coach Andy.

What Is Taper?

I have been having quite a few parents ask about “taper”.  Some parents have a general idea, some parents know a great detail of what they used to do as swimmers, and some have no idea.  Either way, it is a good thing for all parents to understand what taper is, and what type of taper we (the Hamden/North Haven YMCA Typhoons) use.

First and foremost, taper is the significant decrease of yardage per hour while maintaining intensity within the practice sets.  So, while we will practice for relatively the same amount of time, there is more purposeful (and fast) swimming with more rest after each swim or set.

With that said, let’s take a look at the three different types of taper:

  1. Step Taper — This is where the yardage per hour for practices drop in a step direction.  So, the first week of taper will yield a specific amount of yardage that will stay throughout that entire week.  The second week of taper will step down to a lesser yardage and maintain that specific yardage throughout that week, etc.  So, if you were to graph out the yardage per day it would look like steps going down.
  2. Linear Taper — This is where the yardage per hour is dropped consistently per day of training.  So, for one day it will be 2000 yards per hour, the second day is 1900 per hour, the third is 1800 per hour, and so on until the final day of training.  If this were to be graphed out, it would be a straight (diagonal) line down from upper left to lower right.
  3. Progressive Taper — This is a combination of step taper and linear taper where the yardage is exponentially and mathematically decreased each day to look like a ski slope that plains out at the end of the training (if it is graphed).  This has been scientifically proven to be the most efficient form of taper through a 14 – 21 day taper process.

We utilize a progressive taper with our Juniors and Seniors as we typically plan for a 14 day taper period.  Again, this has been scientifically proven to be the most effective form of taper throughout several studies which involve highly trained athletes.  Typically, sprinters will see a decrease in time of 3% to 6% while mid-distance and distance swimmers will experience a 2% to 4% decrease in time.

For the Silver and Gold groups, we do more of a steep step taper where we will decrease the yardage within the last week of training to a significant exponential amount.  This allows swimmers (and coaches) to focus strictly on race technique, starts, turns, and breathing patterns.

Hopefully this helps our parents a bit in understanding what taper really is along with which kind of taper we use throughout our seasons.  However, if you do happen to have any questions, comments, or feedback just leave a comment below.
