Short Course Season Accomplishments – 2009/2010

As we go into the New England Regional Championships, I want to recap our 2009/2010 Short Course season with the Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoon swim team.  So, without further ado, here is how our season played out:

We started our season with our swim clinic about 3 weeks prior to any other swim team in our Yankee Cluster, and it proved to be very successful!  The swimmers learned a plethora of drills and skills that they would be then used throughout the regular season to improve their stroke and racing technique.  Following the clinic, we had our first meet in early October.

The 2009 National YMCA Virtual Invitational had 220 swim teams (in total 11,605 athletes throughout the U.S.) swam locally to compete nationally against each other which was the first time that an event like this has been run by the YMCA.  The Typhoon swimmers did extremely well with the following as highlight swims:

  • W. Munstermann placed 12th in the 50 free, and 15th in the 50 back
  • G. Livsey placed 19th in the 50 free, and 11th in the 100 breast
  • 10 and under boys placed 15th overall
  • Typhoons finished 2nd out of all our Cluster teams (69th overall out of 220 teams – not bad for being a young swim team)

The Autumn Classic was the next stop for the Typhoon swim team, and we did excellent!  Some of the highlight swims were:

  • A. Allen took off 9.23 seconds from her 100 free
  • G. Desroches dropped nearly 4 seconds on her 50 freestyle
  • E. Hodes dropped over 5 seconds in his 50 breaststroke, and over 3 seconds from his 50 free
  • N. Kern dropped 10.98 seconds in his 200 free
  • G. Livsey cut 5 seconds from his 200 free
  • M. Munstermann took down her 200 IM by 8.30, and her 100 free by 3.80

Our meet against Farmington Valley YMCA, though long, was a very fast meet for the athletes.  In total, there were 18 Typhoon swimmers that dropped time for a cumulative of over 3 minutes dropped by those 18 swimmers.  That equals out to an average of 17 seconds dropped per swimmer!

And the times just kept getting faster and faster throughout the year!  Typically swimmers will usually flatten out (or plateau) with their times as the season progresses until it is time to taper.  However, the Typhoon swimmers truly didn’t experience this – at least not at looking through everyone’s times!  That not only shows that we still have room to grow, but that the swimmers have tremendous heart and dedication to get better no matter the circumstances!

So, the short course season went on and into Yankee Cluster Championships.  Last year, we (as an almost brand new team) finished 11th out of 13 teams.  This year, we were able to overtake significantly larger teams and place 9th overall out of 13 teams – as an aside, we were the second smallest team in attendance!  Not only were we able to accomplish that, but take a look at our other achievements:

  • 13 and 14 year old girls placed 8th overall
  • 13 and 14 year old boys placed 5th overall (and this includes 15 – 18 as well)
  • 9 and 10 year old boys placed 3rd overall

The Yankee Clusters wrapped up our regular season which produced 8 individual qualifiers for New England Regionals, but our swimmers wanted more!  So, we ventured off to the Last Ditch meet where we entered 8 individual events.  Four of those events ended up as qualifying times where we added 2 more individually qualified swimmers to our total!

Our year-end stats are still in limbo depending on how the swimmers do at the Regional meet, but here is a quick look at how we stand so far:

  • 43 of 66 team records broken (some broken several times)
  • over 50% of swims were personal best times
  • Out of 60 swimmers, 10 individually qualified for New England’s, and a 19 swimmers competing in relays which is almost 50% of our team that will attend Regionals this year – the highest number in our team’s history!
  • And, most importantly, a total of 60 smiles on 60 swimmers’ faces every week throughout the year as they learned and had fun with their friends!

So, congratulations to the swimmers, the coaching staff, the parents, and the Hamden North Haven YMCA community!  I will try to update all of you on our happenings in Boston as we travel this weekend so stay tuned for more Typhoon News!

Go Typhoons!!

Northern Middlesex YMCA Results

The results have been posted from this past weekend’s swim meet. You can click the following link for them (NMYB Results) or find them under our swim meet results page.

As a meet recap, all of the Typhoon swimmers did an outstanding job on Saturday morning against the Northern Middlesex YMCA Barracudas! Both swim team‘s had great results with quite a few swimmers dropping time which is always hard in this part of the season! Along with the great times, we had one more swimmer qualify for New England’s and another swimmer qualify for New England’s in an alternate event! Great swimming to the both of you!

See you all on deck!

Last Week’s Swim Meet with the Waterbury Swim Team

Last Friday’s swim meet with the Waterbury YMCA Swim Team went extremely well for the Hamden North Haven Typhoons!  Our swimmers posted 70% of their swims as personal best times and several team records were broken; keep in mind this was the first meet of the 2009 Summer Season as well!

With all of that said, I thought the swimmers did an outstanding job and I hope they all had fun out there!  I definitely look forward to seeing everyone this upcoming Friday at the Mystic YMCA as their swim team plays host to our second meet of the season!

Happy Swimming, and Go Typhoons!

Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team – Last Practice

The Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team has their last practice tonight and will travel to the New England Regional Championships this weekend!  Our 13 – 14 year old swimmers will compete on Saturday afternoon where we have one qualified male swimmer and a female relay team (should be very fun to watch).  On Sunday, we have a 9 – 10 male qualifier, 9 – 10 female qualifer, and an 8 and under male qualifier with two other relay teams attending.

We (the coaches) are so excited to see the hard work pay-off for these swimmers as they have been through some intense practices over the past month!  Let’s wish them all well this weekend as they attend their last YMCA Swim Meet of the season!

Hamden Swim Clinic

The Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team will host their semi-annual pre-season Swim Team Clinic in the last week of April.  This will be (as always) a great time for the swimmers to learn as it is much more hands-on and more of a teaching technique than swimming workouts.  It’s a great way for Hamden North Haven Swimmers to get back into the water and refresh their previous year’s experience, but it’s also a great way for new swimmers to get in the pool and learn while getting to know the returning Typhoon Swimmers.

So, again, the Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team will be holding their Swim Team Clinic starting on April 27, 2009!  Register soon as spots will be extremely tight for the summer swim team!

Last Practice

The Hamden North Haven Swim Team (the YMCA Typhoons) held their final regular season (Short Course) practice last night.  Everyone did a fantastic job during the taper, and will hopefully benefit from all of the hard work at this weekend’s swim meet!

With regard to this weekend’s YMCA championship swim meet, arrival times for all swimmers have been sent, entries have been posted on our website, and directions to Plainville are also available on the website.  If you have any other questions please feel free to give me a call or e-mail me at any point!

Also, since we are nearing the end of the Short Course Season, thoughts of the Long Course season are coming up.  With that said, the Swim Clinic registration has started and will begin April 27, 2009.  The clinic is two weeks and leads directly into the Long Course Season.  Registration Information can be found on our website under www.typhoonswimming.com/registration.html.  There will also be a registration form posted on the home page and the Long Course page as soon as possible.

Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Meet with Northern Middlesex YMCA

This past weekend marked one of Hamden North Haven YMCA Typhoons’ last swim meets of the season.  The meet was held on February 7th at the Northern Middlesex YMCA with the Barracudas Swim Team.  There were a few technical faults with regard to entries, but everything worked out fine in the end!

The Typhoon swimmers, from what I saw and heard, had a great time supporting each other, and times looked great from what Coach Elaina, Coach Alisse, and I were recording.  One new swimmer qualified for New England Regional Championship (which will allow us to send a 9-10 boys’ relay team), and two of our swimmers (already qualified) improved their seed time for their qualifying events.  I will, hopefully, have the swim meet results to post on the website by tomorrow evening!

Next weekend (February 14, 2009) will be our last YMCA Dual Swim Meet until the Long Course Season.  We will be at home (Albertus Magnus) with the arrival time of 7:45 am and warm-ups starting at 8:00 am.  Please make sure you let me know as soon as possible whether or not you plan on attending.  Since this is the last dual meet for our Hamden North Haven Swim Team, and we are nearing the Yankee Cluster Championship (entries posted on our YMCA Swim Team website, I hope that we can get a good showing from all of our swimmers!

Happy Swimming, and Go Typhoons!!

Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team’s New Forum

I am proud to announce that we, the Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team (the Typhoons) now have an open source forum for parents to leave comments, question, news, etc.  They now have the ability to openly communicate with eachother via the internet and do not have to wait on e-mail to get a response as the forum is accessible from any computer or smart phone.  You can visit the forum by clicking: Hamden North Haven YMCA Swimming Forum.  I am currently, however, still working on the design so that you are able to easily navigate back to the home page.  I will keep everyone up to date on how that re-design is going, but please enjoy the forum!

New Hamden North Haven Swim Team Website

Alright, I have finally revamped our Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team website (www.typhoonswimming.com). Please feel free to check it out, let me know if you see anything that needs to be updated, changed, etc. Happy swimming!

Registration Deadline for the Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team

We are nearing the deadline (January 10, 2009) for registration with our Hamden North Haven YMCA Swim Team.  That being said, for more information about us you can visit our Hamden North Haven Swim Team website.   So, if anyone is still out there and interested in joining a YMCA swim team during the short course season please feel free to contact us and find out more information!

For those of you that are interested, but are hesitant because you/your swimmer hasn’t been to a meet yet, don’t worry!  We still have 6 more swim meets this season (not including our New England Regional Championship meet).  So, your swimmer will get plenty of experience and time with their swim team friends!  Also, if you cannot register due to scheduling difficulties, we do have our semi-annual swim clinic coming up in late April that you can register for ahead of time!

All the best, happy swimming, and Go Typhoons!
